What is mildew? It usually takes the role of a thin, black or even white growth, produced by mold. Molds are always present in the air, but the type that grows mildew requires moisture and a specific temperature in order to grow. Mold is capable of growing on anything, and warm, damp, poorly lit spaces are the ideal environment for mildew. You SHOULD pay extra attention to basements, cellars, crawl spaces, and sometimes even clothing closets.

You can also find mildew on draperies, rugs, shower curtains and damp clothes. The moisture in building materials, used in new houses, is also great for mold growth. As it progresses it causes damage and leaves a musty odor. More negative effects are discoloration and decay of the fabric.

Mold and mildew prevention

If your home is already infected by mold, preventing mildew is a bothersome task. The first thing you need to do is to identify the most likely places mold would form, and making sure these areas are clean and dry.

High humidity levels and warm temperatures are great conditions for mildew growth. Soiled articles, clothing included, supplies food for the mildew, creating the right conditions for its evolving. Kitchen walls are stained with greasy films, providing enough nutrients for molds. Be sure to keep an eye on such areas clean them on regular basis.

Moisture is the reason mold exits.

The whole process of mildew prevention is seeking out the problematic areas and keeping them dry. The excessive moisture is an indication for needed additional repairs. It’s not uncommon to see continually wet basements due to water leakage through cracks in the wall. The solution is to replace the defective or cracked mortar and make sure there are no problems with the outside drainage.  To get RID of the dampness, heat the entire house for a short period of time, and open all windows and doors to let out the moisture-laden air.

Cool air has a lot less moisture than warm air. Air-conditioning systems have the ability to remove moisture by taking up warm air, making it cooler and circulating it back into the room. To control the humidity, you can attach a humidistat. Make sure you close all windows and doors when using air-conditioners and dehumidifiers. An excellent way of removing moisture is through good ventilation and air movement. When outside air is drier than inside, ventilation allows dry air to enter, taking up excess moisture and carrying it outside.

Prevent mildew odor

That particular odor is the indicator for mold grew and is often noticeable in shower stalls and basements. To prevent any further damage to your house, take precautions to get rid of the musty odors. That is possible if the infected area is dry and well heated. If that still doesn’t work, it’s time to call a professional.
